UAE Armed Forces destroy Iranian drone over national territory

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Monday that it had intercepted an Iranian drone within its territorial waters. This incident occurred during a period of heightened tension between the United States and Iran, following a series of military actions between the two nations. Previously, the U.S. and Iran had exchanged fire on the weekend for the first time in a month.

The UAE's Defense Ministry described the incident as a "dangerous escalation" that breached the country's sovereignty, security, and stability. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the attack posed a direct threat to the safety of its citizens and residents. In response, the UAE stated that the situation neither resembled war nor peace, signaling a desire for a sustainable solution and a more practical approach towards resolving the conflict.

Iranian officials reported that two individuals were killed and several more were injured in the U.S. attack on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles at targets in Jordan, which were later intercepted by U.S. forces. This escalation in violence has disrupted global oil trade, pushing the price of Brent crude oil above $90—a 25% increase since the war began—and raising concerns about the economic impact on the region.

As tensions mounted, the UAE called for a political solution to restore normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the world's primary oil shipping lane. Iran, however, maintained its stance that it has the right to defend itself and will respond decisively. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated the need to adhere to the June memorandum of understanding between Iran and the U.S. and stressed that the solution to the conflict is clear.

The situation has drawn attention from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a group of countries seeking to balance U.S. global influence, with leaders including China's Xi Jinping, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and India's Narendra Modi in attendance.
