Trump stuck at lowest approval rating of his presidency as midterms approach - poll

US President Donald Trump's approval rating has hit an all-time low amid growing dissatisfaction with the war in Iran and his economic management, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday. Just 33% of Americans approve of Trump's performance in the White House, marking the third consecutive poll with that figure. This low approval rating could prove detrimental to Trump's Republican Party, which will be defending its slim congressional majorities in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.

In contrast, Democrats appear more enthusiastic about the elections, with 46% of self-identified Democrats expressing "very enthusiastic" intentions to vote in November, compared to 31% of Republicans. When asked which party voters would support in the congressional elections, 36% of independents chose Democrats, and 22% selected Republicans.

Trump's popularity remains below Joe Biden's low point during his tenure, which was 35% approval in October 2024. Like Biden, Trump has faced widespread discontent over inflation, with just 36% of Americans approving of the war in Iran. The conflict has seen intermittent activity, but recently, both sides have engaged in missile strikes.

Additionally, Iran has blocked a major oil transit point since the war's inception. A significant portion of Americans, 71%, including 40% of Republicans, disapprove of Trump's handling of the cost of living. Notably, for the first time in about a decade, registered voters indicated that the Democratic Party has better economic ideas than the Republican Party. The poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
