Trump says US reviewing position on Falkland Islands

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States is examining its stance on the Falkland Islands, following claims that Washington had threatened to oppose Britain's sovereignty if it failed to boost defense spending. The suggestion regarding the South Atlantic archipelago, the site of a 1982 war between Britain and Argentina, was among measures being drafted by the Pentagon to encourage NATO allies to fulfill spending commitments, according to the Daily Telegraph.

"I always review every position," Trump said in an Oval Office briefing, adding that this was just one of many. When asked if he desired Britain's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to increase defense spending, Trump remarked, "The UK's got some problems, but they'll get solved." The US maintains its neutrality over the Falkland Islands, officially recognizing the de facto UK administration, without taking a side in the conflicting sovereignty claims.

While the US State Department confirmed this position in April when initial reports of a possible review emerged, the Pentagon review aimed at achieving a 5-percent defense spending target from allies could potentially offer Britain "special attention" by opposing its sovereignty outright, the Telegraph stated. Despite four decades passing since the conflict, tensions remain high between Britain and Argentina.

The 1982 war resulted in 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three islanders losing their lives.
