White House resident Donald Trump defended the expansion of data centers across the United States, calling them a "golden egg" that would bring prosperity to communities and criticized the growing opposition to them as beneficial to China's AI leadership race. Trump insisted that the only reason communities should oppose data centers is if they wish to become poor and behind; success and prosperity are achieved by supporting data centers, he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

The president argued that China was most delighted with this development and could not believe it was happening. Currently, there are approximately 4,000 data centers in the United States, with at least 75 more slated for construction in the first quarter of 2026 due to local moratoriums or restraints. The tech giants - Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Oracle - plan to invest over $750 billion in these facilities in 2026, marking the largest capital investment in a single sector in decades.

These centers house thousands of servers for processing, storing, and distributing massive amounts of data for cloud services and support the growing AI infrastructure.

Data centers consume increasing amounts of energy and require constant cooling, leading to a high demand for water and electricity. This environmental cost is coupled with citizens' concerns about rising utility bills. Over 70% of Americans oppose the construction of data centers in their towns or cities, a higher percentage than the opposition to nuclear power plants, according to a recent Gallup survey.

The opposition to data centers has transcended party lines, with both Democrats and Republicans joining efforts to limit or delay their growth, especially as we approach less than two months before the U.S. midterm elections that will decide control of the House and a third of the Senate.
