In The Number Ones, I review every single #1 song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. The column is now biweekly, alternating with The Alternative Number Ones on Mondays. I like Lin-Manuel Miranda, even though many people ridicule him. He's a talented songwriter who can create complex, layered songs like "We Don't Talk About Bruno," which became a pop smash.
This song is unique because it's the second Disney animated musical song to reach #1 on the Hot 100. Unlike other songs that reached #1 from Disney movies, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is not a grand, emotive ballad but rather a character moment for the film's protagonist. It features Disney's signature flourishes and overlapping musical bits, and it's crafted by a master of the craft.
When my kids listened to it, they loved it without me getting annoyed, which shows the song's power.
