The echoes of Merdeka still ring for Kalsom Taib

Kalsom Taib, an 84-year-old author and culinary heritage custodian, vividly recalls her experiences attending the Merdeka celebrations in Kuala Lumpur when she was only 15 years old. Living in Johor Bahru at the time, Kalsom attended the historic event during the school holidays. The city was buzzing with excitement as shops were adorned with decorations in anticipation of the big day.

Kalsom's father, Taib Andak, a district officer in Kuala Lumpur, had organized the celebrations and facilitated her attendance. She was dressed in a favorite dress gifted to her by her mother, Zainab Ahmad, and brought an umbrella just in case, as some rain was forecasted earlier. Despite the slight rain earlier, it cleared up in time for the celebrations.

Kalsom was among the tens of thousands of people of diverse backgrounds who gathered at the newly built Merdeka Stadium. The Duke of Gloucester, representing Queen Elizabeth II, presented the instrument of independence to Tunku Abdul Rahman, who subsequently read the Proclamation of Independence. Tunku Abdul Rahman raised his hand and exclaimed 'Merdeka' seven times, which was echoed by the entire stadium.

Kalsom still cherishes the memory of that day, noting that the echoes of 'Merdeka' remain the most unforgettable moments of her life. In her new memoir, 'A Life Reimagined: A Memoir', Kalsom reflects on her Merdeka experience and shares other significant chapters of her life, from her childhood during the Japanese Occupation to her corporate career and the Reformasi years.

She hopes to pass down her knowledge and experiences to future generations while emphasizing the importance of upholding the values championed by Malaysia's founding leaders.
