Tembisa Hospital corruption accused Stefan Govindraju granted R200, 000 bail

Stefan Govindraju, a 37-year-old man, appeared in court on Monday, charged with fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in a procurement fraud scheme at Tembisa Hospital. The South African Police Service (SAPS) stated that they continue to pursue those involved in the corruption scandal at the hospital.

Govindraju was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport on August 28, 2026, upon his return from overseas. The charges against him are in connection with alleged participation in a complex investigation involving multimillion-rand tender fraud at Tembisa Hospital's procurement process. The Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and money laundering allegations were also part of the charges.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), there were no grounds to oppose Govindraju's bail as he had been cooperating with investigators. The State intends to continue engaging with him on other matters, with future appearances scheduled for September. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) confirmed the corruption at Tembisa Hospital in July, revealing new details about Syndicate X and its alleged mastermind, Stefan Govindraju.

The SIU investigation revealed multiple syndicates involved in misappropriating over R2 billion through procurement fraud schemes meant for healthcare services at the hospital. Govindraju was identified as the director of at least 75 entities, 73 of which were irregularly appointed at Tembisa Hospital. These entities received 1,237 contracts through a procurement process that did not comply with applicable procurement prescripts.

The SIU identified approximately R100 million in payments from the alleged Govindraju syndicate to Tembisa Hospital officials, suspected of being undue gratification.
