Tanker drivers threaten strike over deplorable VALCO-TOR-Kpone road

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has threatened to go on strike over the poor condition of a crucial road between the Valco Roundabout, the Tema Oil Refinery, and Kpone. This route is vital for the transportation of petroleum products, flowing through multiple loading depots and warehouses. The union's chairman, George Nyawunu, highlighted that the road's deplorable state has made their operations increasingly challenging.

The road project was first contracted in 2008 but was abandoned, only to be re-awarded in 2023 under the previous government. However, the current contractor has been inconsistent, leaving the road in a deplorable state. Nyawunu expressed dissatisfaction with the government's lack of response to their concerns, despite the significant revenue generated by their operations.

The union had previously written to the Minister for Roads and Highways and the Minister for Energy, but these requests have not been met with positive action. Consequently, the union has announced plans to stage a sit-down strike starting from September 2, 2026, urging all tanker drivers to participate by parking their vehicles until their grievances are addressed.
