Tank farm owners deny polluting Lagos waterways

Lagos Area Manager Sarat Braimah of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) recently unveiled the agency's partnership with Parts Central Limited in a new waterways cleanup initiative. Braimah identified tank farms, ship ballast discharge, and waste from waterfront communities as major contributors to pollution in the state's waterways.

She noted that some sections of the waterways around the Kirikiri area had become visibly blackened with industrial waste, contrasting sharply with the normally blue waters of the state. Braimah emphasized the importance of soak-away systems in waterfront properties and called on tank farm operators, dredging companies, resident houses, and boat operators to dispose of waste properly, highlighting the potential for recycling plastic waste for economic value.

Despite acknowledging the cleanup drive's role in the blue economy and job creation, a tank farm owner expressed skepticism, stating that his company follows proper waste disposal protocols.
