Suspect arrested after teen shot when hunting companion mistakes him for animal in Sarawak

MIRI, Aug 31 — Lawas district police chief DSP Liong Tindan reported on August 25 that a suspect had been arrested in connection with a shooting incident involving a 17-year-old teenager in Long Lidong, Lawas. According to Liong, the police recovered a homemade firearm, locally known as a 'bakakuk', believed to be the weapon used in the incident. The firearm was discovered hidden at a hut near the suspect's residence, having been concealed on the ground beneath a zinc sheet.

The teenager was reportedly injured on August 16 while cleaning a water catchment area approximately 1km from his home. Investigations later revealed that the victim and his hunting companion had ventured into the forest when the friend mistakenly shot the teen, mistaking him for an animal. Police investigations are ongoing, including efforts to trace witnesses and gather additional relevant information.

The public is advised to provide any pertinent information to the police and refrain from speculating. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960.
