Stronger GRA digital systems needed at ports – IEAG

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana’s customs agency, has been urged by the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) to enhance its digital services and payment platforms. The call comes after recent breakdowns in the Ghana.gov platform at Tema Harbour, a major sea port, caused disruptions and financial losses for businesses.

Executive Director of the IEAG, Mr Samson Asaki Awingobit, highlighted that the platform was down for nearly a week, impacting businesses that rely on digital systems for customs and other port-related transactions. He emphasized the need for system resilience, regular maintenance, technical support, and contingency arrangements to ensure reliable digital infrastructure.

The IEAG stressed that digital platforms should be robust enough to prevent technical failures from halting essential port and customs services, and advocated for the establishment of backup systems to maintain critical transactions during outages. The association also praised the Gold Board for its role in stabilizing foreign exchange and reducing borrowing costs, urging these entities to maintain these measures as Ghana continues to adopt technology-driven systems for trade facilitation.
