Spanish PM backs Morocco over Ceuta migrant crisis as King Felipe visit is announced

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has dismissed accusations that Morocco was responsible for the surge of migrants entering Ceuta, emphasizing the necessity of working together with Rabat to address the crisis. In his first media interview since the mass influx at the end of July, Sánchez stated that ongoing investigations are underway to determine how over 70,000 individuals crossed into Ceuta from Morocco, with many swimming around or walking over border barriers.

Most of these migrants returned to Morocco shortly after, but around 5,000 remain in Ceuta, including approximately 1,200 minors. The influx caused significant strain on the small Spanish territory, which is only 18 square kilometers in size and home to around 80,000 residents. Tensions escalated as residents staged demonstrations against security issues, overcrowding, and sanitation concerns.

Sánchez strongly defended Morocco’s actions and dismissed claims that Moroccan authorities deliberately facilitated the crossings, stating that there is no evidence from intelligence agencies indicating any involvement. He insisted that the crisis could only be resolved through cooperation, not through distrust. Morocco has praised for its response, agreeing to expedite the return of Moroccan nationals not eligible for asylum and helping with the family reunification of unaccompanied minors.

Sánchez highlighted that children can only be returned in compliance with Spanish law and upon requests from parents or guardians. He also stated that the government is preparing sufficient accommodation within Ceuta and pledged an additional €168 million in financial assistance for the enclave to cope with the consequences of the crisis.
