Singer D4vd loses prominent lawyers defending him in killing of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez

Los Angeles, August 31, 2026 — Singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has lost his prominent legal team as he faces trial for the alleged killing, sexual abuse, and dismembering of a 14-year-old girl, Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The change in defense attorneys came during a hearing where Burke entered a new not guilty plea.

Prior to the switch, Blair Berk and her colleagues Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter represented the musician, but they were replaced by a public defender from the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. The previous defense attorneys cited a judge's approval to withdraw, stating they continue to support Burke's defense against the serious charges.

However, they did not provide further explanation regarding their departure. Despite earning at least $10 million from his music between 2023 and 2025, it remains unclear how Burke qualifies for a public defender, whose role is to defend clients who cannot afford a lawyer. The Public Defender’s Office confirmed they conducted a thorough financial evaluation and found Burke eligible for their services.

Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel now heads Burke's defense. Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo denied Burke's initial request to delay the arraignment and instead set a plea hearing for the same day. A status conference is scheduled for October, with no trial date set at this time. After a five-day evidentiary hearing in July, Judge Olmedo ruled that there was sufficient evidence for Burke to face trial on charges of murder, continuous lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains.
