She waited at home while her husband fought for peace

Jill Lawrence remained steadfast at home while her husband, Desmond Godfrey Lawrence, served his country in the police force. As a Special Branch policeman, Desmond risked his life during the Second Malayan Emergency, pursuing communist insurgents and safeguarding the peace that independence brought. Jill, now 81, fondly recalled her pride when she saw her husband in uniform, especially at Merdeka Day celebrations in Ipoh.

After Malaya declared independence in 1957, the struggle to maintain safety continued. Families like Jill's had to endure uncertainty, waiting without knowing when their loved ones would return. Desmond rarely shared details about his Special Branch operations, but Jill knew he faced danger on covert missions, including a high-risk operation in 1981 known as Operation Catfish.

In the memoir by Special Branch veteran Paul Kiong, Desmond is depicted as both strong and compassionate, preferring kindness and respect over intimidation when dealing with captured insurgents. Jill balanced raising their three children and pursuing a teaching career while waiting for Desmond to return from his dangerous work. Despite the burdens, Jill never questioned Desmond's dedication to his job.

When he finally returned, she celebrated with renewed excitement. One particularly dangerous incident involved a close call when a student disappeared due to the kidnappers' mistaken belief that he was Desmond. Still, Jill never requested Desmond to resign from the Special Branch. Over the years, Desmond was honored with several awards, including the Panglima Gagah Berani in 1983, before retiring at 55 and passing away in 2002.

Jill continues to honor her husband's service, recognizing the courage of those who sacrificed their families for the greater good.
