Shailene Woodley Reflects on Cut Mary Jane Role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Shailene Woodley, who played Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, shared her thoughts on the decision to cut her character from the film. The Divergent and Big Little Lies actress had initially considered the role her "dream" role in the Marvel-Sony sequel. However, she later discovered that she had been removed from the movie entirely before it was released in 2014.

Woodley expressed her initial excitement upon being cast as Mary Jane, stating that it was her favorite superhero and the character she grew up admiring.

Yet, a year after filming, Woodley learned that she was no longer part of the film. She was shocked and confused when told that the filmmakers had introduced new characters and would wait for a potential future between Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. Despite the logic behind this decision, Woodley was still disappointed since the film never materialized.

Director Marc Webb and producer Matt Tolmach explained that it was difficult to introduce a new love interest in the midst of Peter and Gwen's relationship. They also admitted that the project was too ambitious for the time, as they were attempting to create a "superhero opera."

Regrettably, Woodley never returned to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Instead, Sony Pictures and Marvel rebooted the franchise with Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man and Zendaya as the MCU's version of Mary Jane. Sony then produced a series of unsuccessful villain spin-offs, but eventually shelved plans for any further Spidey-related projects. Andrew Garfield eventually returned to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
