Serena Williams plans on playing singles again: 'I have to'

Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, has announced her intention to return to singles play following a four-year hiatus. In an interview on ABC's Good Morning America, the 44-year-old athlete revealed that her comeback has been motivated by her desire to demonstrate to her daughters Olympia and Adira that anything is achievable.

Williams made her official return in doubles earlier this year and competed in her first singles match at Wimbledon, where she lost to 20-year-old Maya Joint. She explained that an injury sustained at Wimbledon prevented her from fully recovering and that she didn't wish to deny others the chance to compete based on her current fitness level.

When asked about her future plans, Williams stated unequivocally, "I probably will play again. I have to." At the US Open, Williams participated in mixed doubles alongside Carlos Alcaraz, winning their first match but ultimately losing in the quarterfinals to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli. She also returned to women's doubles with her sister Venus, receiving a wild card invitation to compete at the US Open. The sisters will begin their US Open campaign later this week.
