Second rare falcon sells for more than Dh1 million at Adihex

A rare falcon was sold for more than Dh1 million at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex) on Sunday. This marks the second time a bird has topped the Dh1 million mark at this year's event. The previous record was set on Saturday when a rare pure-white Gyrfalcon fetched Dh1.5 million. Both birds were bred in the United States by the Mark Moglich farm, which focuses on breeding high-end raptors such as snow-white Arctic Gyrfalcons and peregrine falcons.

The falcon sold for Dh1.1 million weighs 1,460 grams, measuring 18.5 inches in length and 18.5 inches in wingspan. Known for their exceptional hunting abilities and rarity, Gyrfalcons are in high demand and fetch astronomical prices at auctions and private sales. Their superior physical traits, combined with their cultural significance as symbols of elite status in the Middle East, contribute to their exorbitant value.

These birds outperform others in speed, precision, size, and heat tolerance. The most sought-after birds often win regional hunting contests, resulting in substantial financial rewards that further fuel market demand. Breeding these magnificent raptors requires years of expertise and specialized care, often on international farms in Europe and the US.

The most expensive pure mottled Gyrfalcon auctioned off in 2021 at the International Falcon Breeders Auction in Riyadh reached a staggering price of $467,000.
