Rare brain surgery in Vijayapura hospital saves woman

A complex brain surgery at B.L.D.E. Deemed University B.M. Patil Medical College and Hospital in Vijayapura saved the life of a 47-year-old woman named Renavva Nalatwada. The woman, from Chittaragi village in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, suffered from a severe grade-4 subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and a right middle cerebral artery (MCA) bifurcation aneurysm. The aneurysm's rupture led to excessive bleeding around the brain.

Upon examination, doctors identified a bilobed aneurysm in the right MCA bifurcation. Realizing the severity, they recommended immediate microsurgical intervention. During the surgery, the doctors successfully clipped the aneurysm's neck while preserving vital MCA branches and perforator veins that supply blood to the brain.

Despite being in a critical condition, the patient showed excellent recovery, with no new neurological deficits observed after the surgery. She was discharged from the hospital on the seventh day and has since returned home in good health. This timely diagnosis, prompt surgery, skilled medical team, and comprehensive intensive care coordination resulted in the patient's survival.

The entire treatment was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat-Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) scheme. M. B. Patil, the Minister and BLDE president, praised the team, led by Mallappa Huggi, for their successful surgery.
