Prosecutors seek death penalty for Gwangju murder suspect

Prosecutors have requested the death penalty for Jang Yoon-gi, a 23-year-old man accused of murdering a 16-year-old high school student in Gwangju in May. The prosecutor's office presented this demand during Jang's trial, citing a significant risk of him committing further offenses, such as murder and sexual assault, should he be released back into society.

Jang's alleged crimes include the rape of the victim and an attempt to kill another 17-year-old male student who attempted to intervene. He has also been accused of raping a Vietnamese woman and illegally filming a teenage girl's body. In his final statement, Jang expressed remorse, admitting he will suffer the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. The sentencing hearing is set to take place on September 30.
