Prosecutors seek death penalty for Gwangju murder suspect

Gwangju prosecutors have requested the death penalty for a 23-year-old man accused of murdering a 16-year-old high school student in May. The Gwangju District Prosecutors Office argued that Jang Yoon-gi poses a significant risk of reoffending, particularly in the areas of murder and sexual assault. Earlier that month, Jang had attempted to rape the victim, later raped a Vietnamese woman, and illegally filmed a teenage girl's body.

During his final statement, Jang apologized to the victims, expressing that he will serve his punishment for the rest of his life. The sentencing hearing is set to take place on September 30.
