Port congestion could undermine 24-hour economy policy – GUTA

The Ghana Union of Traders' Associations (GUTA) has warned that persistent congestion at the Port of Tema could jeopardize Ghana's 24-hour economy policy if urgent action is not taken to restore smooth port operations. In a statement, GUTA's President, Clement Boateng, highlighted the severe impact of the congestion on businesses and increased costs.

The union attributes the situation largely to the failure to discharge empty containers at shipping line depots and yards, leading to trucks queuing from the port entrance to the gates of the Regional Maritime University. GUTA further identified inadequate logistics among shipping lines as a contributing factor. If the congestion persists, it could negatively affect the government's 24-hour economy policy, especially as imports peak toward the end of the year.

GUTA called for immediate stakeholder engagement between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and shipping lines to resolve the issue and prevent further price increases for consumers.
