Pakistan welcomes Indus Waters Treaty ruling

Islamabad, the Ministry of Information announced that Pakistan has expressed support for an arbitral tribunal's ruling, deeming India's attempt to suspend or abrogate the Indus Waters Treaty as unlawful under the treaty and international law. According to the ministry, the tribunal affirmed that the treaty remains fully in force and not expired.

Pakistan reiterated that India remains obligated to adhere to all provisions of the treaty, including those related to the design and operation of hydroelectric projects in the western rivers. The tribunal also imposed interim measures on India's Ratle Hydro-Electric Project, prohibiting the concreting of the dam wall and power intake structure at elevations specified by the tribunal.

These measures will remain in effect until a final decision on the project's compliance with the treaty is made by a neutral expert, expected in July 2027. Pakistan welcomed these interim measures, stating they could facilitate the resumption of dialogues between India and Pakistan based on the Indus Waters Treaty framework. The Ministry of Information pledged to thoroughly review the tribunal's final award and order upon its formal publication.
