Padres Breakout Utility Man Out For Season After Resurgent Second Half

San Diego Padres infielder Luis Rengifo will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in a non-contact incident during Saturday's 7-6 defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old was carted off the field after catching a relay throw from second base and attempting to chase Rays baserunner Taylor Walls to third. Rengifo awkwardly attempted to secure the ball and fell to the ground, allowing three runs to score.

This development follows a second-half resurgence for Rengifo, who, in 38 games so far this season, has hit .784 with four home runs and 17 RBIs. Initially an infielder, Rengifo adapted to various positions, including left field, second base, third base, and designated hitter. He joins fellow outfielder Gavin Sheets on the injured list.

Despite a tough season thus far, the Padres remain in the Wild Card race, currently trailing the Arizona Diamondbacks by just 0.5 games. They will look to close the gap with a strong road series against the Cincinnati Reds, starting on Monday.
