Orengo defends his Linda Mwananchi presidential bid, calls for internal democracy

Siaya Governor James Orengo has defended his decision to run for the Linda Mwananchi presidential ticket, asserting that his ambition is not aimed at undermining Senator Edwin Sifuna. On August 31, 2026, Orengo stated that announcing his interest in the 2027 presidential race is legitimate and should not be seen as an attempt to block any other contender within the opposition coalition.

He emphasized that the movement should permit a democratic process to select its presidential candidate, arguing that a competitive ticket would not necessarily weaken the coalition. Orengo cited the 2007 experience in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where five senior leaders vied for the presidential ticket, and maintained his commitment to eventually selecting one presidential candidate.

However, he expressed concern over discussions on the matter during a recent Linda Mwananchi retreat, stating that the issue should be addressed with more consultation. His position on the presidential ticket caused controversy during the retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County. Orengo, a prominent figure in Linda Mwananchi’s mobilization efforts, highlighted his political experience and record as he seeks the opposition ticket.

His entry into the race has gained attention following his criticism of President William Ruto's record on constitutional matters during his remarks at the burial of Steven Onyango in Homa Bay County. The opposition coalition aims to present a single candidate in the 2027 presidential election, prompting further consultations on the selection process for the final flagbearer.
