One Dead, 15 People Unaccounted For After Flash Flooding at the Grand Canyon

One person has died and 15 others are missing or unaccounted for after a flash flood struck the Grand Canyon over the weekend, according to park service officials. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. The National Park Service (NPS) has requested information on the 15 individuals who may be in danger.

As of Sunday morning, 62 people had been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and lower North Kaibab Trail, with more evacuations expected in nearby areas. The flash-flood event occurred on Saturday afternoon near the Phantom Ranger Station. Nearly all footbridges over Bright Angel Creek were destroyed in the floods, preventing access to hikers.

The NPS has closed several facilities, including Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, and the North Kaibab Trail. The Transcanyon Waterline, which provides water for drinking and fire suppression, has also been damaged. Conservation measures, such as limiting overnight accommodations and prohibiting fires, have been implemented.

A flash flood watch has been issued by the National Weather Service, urging caution in flood-prone areas. The restrictions are set to remain in place days before the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend in the U.S.
