NCDEX launches futures on Chennai rains

NCDEX, a prominent commodity exchange, has introduced an exchange-traded weather derivatives futures contract focused on Chennai's rainfall. These RAINCHNNAI contracts are designed to assist market participants in managing the financial risks associated with the North-East monsoon, which contributes to nearly 70% of Chennai's annual rainfall.

The Chennai-based rain contract offers a transparent, standardized, and cash-settled futures contract for managing rainfall-linked risks. NCDEX's Chief Business Officer, Kedar Deshpande, explained that the introduction of RAINCHNNAI complements the already launched RAINMUMBAI contract, which was developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and relies on official data from the India Meteorological Department.

Together, RAINMUMBAI and RAINCHNNAI extend rainfall risk management across India's monsoon cycle, encompassing both the Southwest Monsoon (June-September) and the Northeast Monsoon (September-December). The Chennai rain contract utilizes a scientifically structured Cumulative Deviation Rainfall model, which monitors the deviation of actual rainfall at Chennai's Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations from the Long Period Average, based on decades of IMD data.

Both the RAINMUMBAI and RAINCHNNAI contracts collectively cover the monsoon risk management cycle that spans from June to December, addressing both of India's major monsoon systems. The exchange emphasizes that these weather derivatives are settled based on observed data rather than traditional insurance products, which require loss assessment.

This settlement method allows for faster settlement cycles and increased operational efficiency for market participants.
