Mumbai Port Launches Probe After Crane Overturns During Heavy-Lift Operation At Indira Dock

The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has commenced an extensive probe into an incident at Indira Dock, where a shore-based mobile crane overturned during a heavy-lift operation involving the vessel M/V Vienna. The incident occurred on the evening of August 30, 2026, around 7:15 pm, causing a fire to break out at the scene. Swift action by the MbPA Fire Brigade and the vessel's crew managed to control and extinguish the fire before it could worsen.

Two crane operators were injured in the accident and were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. As a precautionary measure, the affected area was secured immediately.

Senior MbPA officials have been closely monitoring the situation since the incident. The site has been inspected by the relevant safety authorities, and various stakeholders, including the vessel's representatives, insurance agencies, and the O&M operator, have been involved in surveys, assessments, and the safe retrieval or removal of the affected crane.

MbPA is committed to ensuring that the operators undertake all necessary corrective and preventive measures to maintain safe and compliant cargo operations, with a strong emphasis on preventing recurrence of such incidents. The findings of the investigation will be examined meticulously, and if negligence, dereliction, or non-compliance with safety requirements is found, appropriate action will be initiated according to applicable laws and regulations.
