MSSA Enters Record Books After 133 Years, Recognised As Oldest School Sports Association

Mumbai, August 29, 2026: The Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA), which began operations in 1893, has achieved a historic milestone by being recognized for two prestigious records - that of being the Oldest School Sports Association and hosting the Greatest Number of Schools Participating in Football Tournaments organized by a single organization.

With a history of 133 years, MSSA has consistently striven to promote sports amongst schoolchildren and provide them with platforms to compete, develop and excel. Originating as the Bombay High Schools Athletic Association, the MSSA was founded by Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata and sports-oriented school principals. Currently, MSSA boasts more than 465 affiliated schools that participate in a range of sporting disciplines.

The football program, in particular, is a testament to the breadth of its grassroots sporting movement. Approximately 245 schools, 1,351 teams, and 22,000 players take part annually, with around 2,300 matches conducted across various age groups from Under-8 to Under-16. Celebrating Participation Rather than focusing solely on the records, MSSA takes pride in celebrating the spirit of participation.

MSSA's President, Rev. Fr. Jude Rodrigues, stated, "These records belong to the entire MSSA family. They acknowledge the tireless efforts of generations of school principals, teachers, coaches, students, parents, office bearers, and supporters who have consistently worked towards promoting school sports." The association's mission is clear - to provide every child with an opportunity to participate, compete, and grow through sports.

MSSA's Impact Beyond statistics, MSSA's impact is felt through the opportunities it creates for young athletes. The association's tournaments and sporting initiatives foster discipline, teamwork, leadership, confidence, and sportsmanship, while also serving as a platform for rising athletes to display their talents. Achievements in Football MSSA Inter-School Football Tournament: 4 Teams Advance Greenlawns, Don Bosco, CNS, and Campion emerge victorious in U-8 knockout matches.

Looking Ahead As MSSA moves forward, the association remains committed to increasing participation, enhancing grassroots sports, and creating additional opportunities for schoolchildren across Mumbai. Since its inception in 1893, MSSA continues to etch its place in sporting history, one school, one team, and one young athlete at a time.
