Michail Antonio helps young Ghanaians chase Premier League dreams

In the rural countryside of Leicestershire, Samba Stars, a Ghanaian football academy, are pursuing their dream of making it big in the Premier League. Head coach Freddie Okyere, backed by former West Ham and Nottingham Forest forward Michail Antonio, has been in England for two and a half months with the sole aim of impressing professional clubs and securing a contract.

The academy's unique approach of sending young players directly to the UK to showcase their talent has proven successful, as several clubs, including Bournemouth, Everton, Manchester City, Charlton, Preston, Barnsley and Peterborough, have taken players on trial during the summer.

Okyere expressed admiration for the talent possessed by the young players, stating that Samba Stars Academy aims to provide elite coaching to Ghanaian youth and create opportunities for them to showcase their skills on a professional level. The academy is based in Kumasi while constructing a new facility in Bompata, approximately 100 miles north of Accra, Ghana's capital.

One success story is midfielder Listowell Lord Hinneh, who signed for Middlesbrough in February after a trial. At just 18 years old, Hinneh has already trained with the first team of his new club. He shared his feelings about moving to England, saying that it was a significant milestone for him and that the experience has fueled his dreams of becoming a professional footballer in Europe.

Hinneh's sister Groovy, who lives in Leeds, even offered advice to the Samba Stars squad during their trip, emphasizing the importance of passion, hard work, and determination in achieving their dreams.

Despite initial visa rejections for all but one member of the 20-strong visiting group, the academy was eventually able to secure entry into the UK after being re-evaluated. Hosted by Brook House College in Market Harborough and trained at Harborough Town, who play in the National League North, the Ghanaian players have been exposed to elite coaching and have adapted well to the different style of professional football.

Former West Ham head of recruitment and Manchester City's international scouting and recruitment manager, Rob Newman, played a crucial role in bringing some of the Samba Stars to England. Newman believes that many of the players have the potential to play in Europe and is optimistic about the future of the academy. He stated that he hopes to witness these boys playing in a first team in Europe within the next six months.

The Samba Stars have faced several strong opponents during their time in the UK, including Dorking Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday, Luton, Peterborough, Sheffield United, and Barnsley. They have won most of their matches, with only one defeat against Preston's U21s. Head coach Okyere was impressed by the Samba Stars' performance, particularly their results against top teams like Preston and Peterborough.

Michail Antonio, whose presence has been instrumental in bringing international interest to the academy, believes that the players are just two or three months away from being able to compete at a professional level. The Ghanaian Football Association has also acknowledged the need to widen its global search for talent, potentially impacting home-grown talent in the future.
