Mel Gibson has offered an apology for making light of an American Sign Language interpreter during a recent fan convention appearance. The incident occurred at Fan Expo Canada over the weekend. After taking the stage to speak, Gibson began gesturing behind the interpreter while they were signing in ASL. A video of the moment went viral, sparking outrage and prompting calls for Gibson to apologize.

On Monday, Gibson issued a statement, expressing regret for his behavior and asserting that there was "no intended maliciousness." He explained that his mind can "get all over the place" when under the intense spotlight of a stage appearance. The video of Gibson's actions has since been removed from the internet, but the incident and the public reaction were widely reported.

The deaf community and the interpreter in question were particularly upset by Gibson's behavior, which they saw as disrespectful and ableist. Gibson is not new to issuing apologies following controversies. He apologized in 2006 for antisemitic remarks he made, and in 2010 for a racist comment and physical altercation involving his then-girlfriend.

Recently, Gibson is set to star in a two-part sequel to his 2004 film "The Passion of the Christ," planned for release in 2027.
