Maraga warns Kenyans are working harder but falling further behind

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has expressed concern that despite Kenyans working harder, their economic situation is deteriorating. Speaking on X on August 31, 2026, Maraga pointed out the increasing taxes, stagnant wages, and rising costs of essential goods as factors causing Kenyans to fall further behind. He questioned whether the current trajectory of economic growth is benefiting the hardworking citizens.

Maraga emphasized that an economy should reward work and provide opportunities for improved livelihoods rather than making survival more challenging. The Chief Justice's remarks follow ongoing protests by small-scale traders over the increased cost of doing business due to a revised customs valuation benchmark set by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Traders staged demonstrations on August 28, arguing that the hike from Ksh2.5 million to Ksh3.2 million had increased their importation costs and reduced their profit margins. They feared that higher costs could ultimately be passed on to consumers through increased prices of goods. KRA defended the new benchmark, stating it is a risk-management reference point for the simplified clearance of consolidated cargo, but the actual tax payable depends on the nature, value, and classification of the imported goods.

The ongoing debate reflects broader concerns over household purchasing power, rising food prices, and the impact of taxation on economic growth. Maraga warned that an economy punishing honest work has lost its purpose, adding to the public discourse on balancing revenue generation with policies that protect incomes, businesses, and consumer well-being.
