Maraga taskforce called for return of old police uniform, report reveals

The National Taskforce on Police Reforms, established nearly three years ago by former Chief Justice David Maraga, has released its final report. The report highlights the shift to a new police uniform, which was introduced to ease integration between units and prevent internal rivalry. However, the Taskforce discovered that police officers and the public were not consulted prior to the uniform change.

Many officers expressed dissatisfaction with the new uniform, stating that it lacked professionalism and failed to project confidence and pride in the service. Citizens echoed these sentiments, deeming the new uniform unprofessional and unappealing. In contrast, the Taskforce found that the majority of officers preferred returning to the old uniform, which they saw as a symbol of professional pride.

The Taskforce concluded that to boost officers' confidence and garner the public's respect, the NPS should revert to its old uniform for a period of three years. During this time, a new uniform design process can commence. The committee also suggested involving both public and officer input in the new uniform's design, ensuring proper approval, and maintaining a regular supply of uniforms.

Furthermore, the Taskforce emphasized the need for a transparent approval process for any future uniforms, including those for specialized units.
