Map Shows Food Recalled Over Salmonella, E.Coli Across US in August

In August, the United States experienced a series of food safety recalls due to potential contamination with bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. According to a Newsweek analysis of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notices from July 30 to August 31, affected states were identified based on product distribution and reported outbreak cases.

Recalls ranged in scale, with some limited to a few states and others involving nationwide sales through supermarkets or online retailers. A notable Salmonella outbreak was traced back to jalapeño peppers imported from Mexico, leading to multiple company recalls of products containing the peppers. Other recalls included frozen berries, pistachio nut butter, alfalfa sprouts, green powder products, and mangoes.

The largest recall event was linked to a multistate Salmonella outbreak from jalapeño peppers, which resulted in 431 illnesses across 32 states and 57 hospitalizations as of August 19. Unfortunately, the recall of processed iceberg lettuce contaminated with Cyclospora, one of the year's most significant foodborne illness stories, was not included in the August recall map due to its earlier reporting date.
