Mahama heads to Serbia for 65th anniversary of Non-Aligned Movement

President John Dramani Mahama is set to travel to Belgrade, Serbia, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). He will attend a two-day meeting as a Special Guest of Honour, hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. The anniversary, taking place from August 31 to September 1, 2026, aims to reflect on the movement’s history and discuss its relevance in tackling modern global issues.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa will lead Ghana’s delegation, which includes other leaders and senior officials.

The Non-Aligned Movement was officially established in Belgrade in 1961, with the movement's founding principles emphasizing respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, multilateralism, and cooperation among developing nations. Ghana played a crucial role in the movement's inception, as Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President, was a key figure in championing non-alignment during the Cold War.

The movement emerged at a time when countries sought to maintain an independent foreign policy amidst the rivalry between Western and Eastern blocs.

Ghana and Serbia have maintained diplomatic ties since 1959, with the relationship further strengthened when both countries participated in inaugural bilateral political consultations in Belgrade in July 2026. These talks focused on expanding political engagement and economic cooperation across areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, education, tourism, and information technology.

President Mahama’s presence at the anniversary meeting presents an opportunity to build upon Ghana’s historical ties with Serbia while exploring new avenues for bilateral collaboration.
