Los Angeles Chargers' 53-man roster: Who was cut before deadline?

The Los Angeles Chargers finalized their 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 season. In a series of trades on Sunday, Aug. 30, the team sent cornerback Avery Smith to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick for the 2027 draft. Additionally, Los Angeles traded defensive lineman TeRah Edwards to the Carolina Panthers for a 2028 sixth-round selection, both trades contingent on successful physicals.

Safety Tony Jefferson was initially considered for a potential cut, having played nearly 11 seasons in the NFL, including the last two with the Chargers. However, the team made a deal to retain Jefferson, ensuring his continued presence on the roster. Among the notable cuts, starting punter J.K. Scott was released, with his performance in preseason games drawing criticism.

Scott's 20-yard punt during the finale allowed the Rams a favorable field position, and his average yardage on punt attempts was 33.7. Running back Gregory Desrosiers put up a strong preseason performance with 118 yards and a touchdown against the Rams, but his spot was ultimately taken by Trey Lance. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was waived, likely to pursue a spot on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Lastly, former Wolverine linebacker Marlowe Wax, a 2025 undrafted free agent, earned his place on the roster over Junior Colson, a 2024 third-round selection from the University of Michigan.
