Lithium Miners Cash In as Battery Storage Demand Surges

Lithium miners are experiencing a surge in profits this year due to the soaring demand for battery storage, according to Bloomberg. Chinese lithium giants Tianqi Lithium Corp. and Ganfeng Lithium Group have reported their strongest earnings in three years for the first half of the year, the report added. In May, U.S. company Albemarle revealed that global lithium demand had increased by 45% year-over-year, largely fueled by the burgeoning demand for battery storage.

However, supply growth has been sluggish, resulting in a lucrative gap for miners. Tianqi Lithium Corp. officials cautioned that overseas supply may face policy and logistical challenges, with some production restarts requiring time to resupply the market. CATL, the leading battery manufacturer globally, anticipates energy storage to constitute roughly half of its global sales by 2030, as the expansion of wind and solar energy drives the need for batteries to store surplus electricity for later consumption.

The Middle East conflict has further boosted battery storage and lithium demand as energy-importing nations intensify their alternative energy initiatives to diminish their reliance on Middle Eastern oil and gas. Battery storage has become paramount for grids with substantial wind and solar generation sources since their output often does not match electricity demand.

They serve as one of several mechanisms to stabilize electricity systems, alongside flexible generation, transmission connections, demand response, and other forms of energy storage.
