LEADING THE PACK: No-fee school provides a master class in teaching with few resources

Bopasenatla Secondary School in Diepkloof, Soweto, has defied expectations by achieving remarkable academic results with minimal resources. Principal Takalani Radzuma, who was appointed in October 2021 after serving as deputy principal for 18 years, transformed the school's reputation and enrollment.

Radzuma focused on increasing the visible role of learners in the school's life and involved various stakeholders. Within his first year, eight articles were written about the school, leading to increased enrolment. Today, Bopasenatla has 1,268 learners and 39 teachers, yet it lacks essential facilities like a science laboratory.

Radzuma's strict discipline and planning have been key to the school's success. He imposes a strict code of conduct to protect teaching and learning conditions. The school operates from 7am to 5pm, with learners receiving breakfast during an early-morning session. The day is filled with teaching and revision, with Friday afternoons reserved for matrics and Saturday/Sunday mornings for learners to ensure they get rest.

Despite the lack of parental support due to long working hours, Radzuma keeps learners at school during weekends to ensure structured learning. He has never used Harvard's Data Wise programme but follows its habits closely, emphasizing data-driven leadership. Radzuma's weekly meetings with Grade 12 teachers track curriculum progress, and teachers are coached in assessment literacy through past paper practice.

At-risk learners are identified and provided with intensive revision blocks and coaching during school holidays. The school's success can be attributed to its resourcefulness, strict discipline, and data-driven approach, all working together to create an effective learning environment for underprivileged learners.
