LAWMA showcases skills of Summer School participants

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) recently highlighted the achievements of participants in its 2026 Summer School programme, which focused on practical skills and knowledge in waste management and environmental consciousness. Speaking at the program's grand finale, held at LAWMA headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, praised the initiative as a significant investment in young people's environmental awareness.

Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, explained that Engr. Rotimi-Akodu had urged participants to use their newfound knowledge to encourage positive waste management practices within their families, schools, and communities. Rotimi-Akodu encouraged the young participants to become "environmental ambassadors" to inspire change among their peers.

LAWMA's Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized that the Summer School programme was part of the agency's commitment to educating young people about sustainable waste management practices and the economic opportunities within the sector. He noted that waste, when managed properly, could create jobs, support livelihoods, and contribute to economic development.

The Head of the LAWMA Academy, Mrs. Hauwa Momoh-Ajibola, provided an overview of the four-week summer school programme, which exposed participants to waste sorting, recycling, reuse, environmental sanitation, and responsible waste disposal. She emphasized that the practical sessions helped participants appreciate the value of waste materials and taught them environmental values that extended beyond the classroom.

The event showcased the creative projects produced by the 80 participants aged 7 to 15, with Adekola Khadijah emerging as the Most Outstanding Student for her innovative transformation of discarded carton paper into a signboard bearing the LAWMA Academy's logo and inscription.
