Lanterns Reveals John Stewart's True Mission — Read Episode 3 Recap

After watching this week's Lanterns, I was surprised by how well-adjusted John Stewart has become. Episode 3 delves into John's background, starting with his high-pressure childhood and military career that ultimately led him to his path with the Green Lantern Corps, though the exact details may not be as expected. In the episode's opening moments, John is found unconscious on a mattress in an abandoned shopping mall, disoriented and unaware of his surroundings.

He is brought to an interview with a human Guardian of the Universe, played by Laura Linney. The Guardians typically appear as blue beings, but the one he meets is in human form to ease their conversation. John reveals he knows why he is there and a flashback begins. In a tragic turn of events, John's father, significantly upset upon seeing a green light pass over his house, shoots the television during a news report about the Green Lantern, leading to a spiral of emotional turmoil.

His mother, Bernadette, worries for him but also demands he leave to protect their family. A Guardian named Laura Guardianney visits the family, apologizing for her presence, and gains their trust by showing her true form. She gifts Bernadette a large diamond and warns that whatever the ring saw in John's father was indicative of his genetic makeup.

The Guardians inform John that he will be schooled separately at a young age and give him a Lantern costume and a gun on his fifth birthday. John's father, initially hesitant, accepts the gifts, and John shoots an apple in the backyard, showcasing his bravery. Over time, Bernadette grows frustrated with the Guardians' lack of follow-up and attempts to contact them using a satellite dish.

She later realizes her mistake and comes to terms with loving her husband. John eventually joins the Marines, becoming a sergeant major and sniper known for his patience and skills. However, he is forced into a dishonorable discharge after an incident involving Hal Jordan, leading John to follow his art talent and eventually being chosen for a special project involving a ring that allows him to manifest his father's watch.
