Kyiv orders heightened security amid intense Russian drone strikes

Ukraine has implemented stricter security measures in Kyiv following an increase in Russian drone attacks aimed at paralyzing the capital. These strikes have intensified in recent months, with jet-powered drones attacking the city and surrounding areas. Since last week, there have been a dozen air-raid alerts per day, significantly impacting businesses and causing deaths, including a tragic attack on an ammunition depot that killed 38 people.

As Ukrainian children return to school after their summer holidays, the Kyiv regional military administration has advised against large gatherings of people in high-risk areas. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the military administration, emphasized the need to prevent such gatherings. In response, city officials are preparing changes, including remote learning for schools, and have established an underground shelter for parliament, with seating arranged for 330 members of parliament.

In case of danger, MPs will have a 10-minute window to reach the shelter. The metro has also been rerouted, ceasing to cross the Dnieper River, leading to traffic chaos. Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated during a Telegram meeting with local officials that at least one metro line would remain open, despite the ongoing attacks. Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi also highlighted the enemy's attempt to cripple economic activity in the capital and major cities.

The prolonged air-raid alerts not only threaten citizens' safety but also disrupt businesses, logistics, transportation, schools, and kindergartens. Sergiy Koretskyi called for adapting security rules to better protect people and preserve the ability to live in cities and communities. However, some residents believe the security protocols are ineffective, with experts suggesting a more flexible approach.

If, for instance, a single drone incident causes widespread disruption for about 40 minutes each hour, Mykhailo Zhernakov, a legal think tank head, warns that the city's resilience could be compromised.

Russian attacks extended beyond the city, with another strike killing a two-year-old girl in a Kyiv park in broad daylight on Saturday.
