Kim Jong Un reshuffles military leadership as North Korea deepens Russia ties

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reorganized the country's highest military ranks, according to Reuters on August 30. Former army political bureau chief Kim Song Gi has been named the new defense minister, while his predecessor, No Kwang Chol, has been reassigned to oversee the Military Industry Department. Additionally, military analyst Pak Jong Chon has been reappointed as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Reuters suggests this reshuffle occurred concurrently with Pyongyang's growing relationship with Moscow. In August, Ukraine's Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate reported that Russia had requested new, more advanced KN-30 ballistic missiles from North Korea. Furthermore, HUR revealed that North Korea had significantly increased its military presence in Russia, adding a contingent of 8,500 personnel, including drone operators equipped to target Ukrainian territory, primarily stationed in Russia's Kursk Oblast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed on July 25 that Ukraine had evidence suggesting Russia was seeking to receive an additional 30,000 troops from North Korea later in the year.
