JKIA strike: Jambojet operates 2 of 55 scheduled flights

The Kenyan government has apologized for the disruption caused by the ongoing strike at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), assuring that efforts are underway to reach a settlement between the parties involved. Principal Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei, expressed sincere apologies to affected travellers, stating that the government is doing everything possible to resolve the industrial action.

The strike, initiated on August 30, 2026, has resulted in flight delays and cancellations, affecting air traffic control services and causing significant inconvenience to passengers. KAWU, the union representing the striking workers, claims that Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) have failed to fulfill commitments related to pay, benefits, working conditions, and recognition.

Despite negotiations on Sunday, August 30, 2026, no agreement was reached, and union officials have stated that discussions will continue. The disruption has impacted various airlines, including Kenya Airways, which reported delays of over six hours, and some services were even cancelled. RwandAir also cancelled some Nairobi flights in response to the chaos at JKIA.

Passengers faced long waits, leading to some airlines arranging hotel accommodations and transfers for affected travellers. The disruption has also affected operations at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, with concerns raised by fresh produce exporters over delays to perishable cargo. KAA emphasized that passenger safety remains their top priority while they work to manage the situation and maintain orderly airport operations.

The union expressed a willingness to engage with employers despite the lack of an agreement, signaling that the dispute remains unresolved.
