JKIA strike explained: The issues behind aviation workers’ dispute in Kenya

Passengers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Kenya faced significant delays and cancellations following the resumption of industrial action by aviation workers. This latest strike is not a single-issue dispute but a culmination of a decade-long salary dispute, stalled collective bargaining agreements, and accusations of anti-union practices by the workers.

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), representing employees from various aviation institutions like the Kenya Airports Authority and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, led the industrial action. KAWU secretary-general Moss Ndiema accused the KAA and KCAA of failing to meet commitments made during negotiations brokered by the Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir.

The primary grievance centers on the lack of salary increments for KAA workers, who have not received any raises for over a decade. They are demanding the implementation of outstanding salary awards dating back to 2015. KCAA, however, contends that backdated payments cannot simply be implemented. The dispute also highlights broader frustrations over delayed labour agreements across the aviation sector.

The strike has had a notable impact, affecting both domestic and international travellers, with several airlines experiencing delays and RwandAir cancelling two flights due to air traffic control issues. Passengers reported long waits, with some stranded for over 12 hours as airlines adjusted their schedules. The strike's significance lies in the fact that JKIA is one of Africa's busiest aviation hubs and a crucial international gateway for East Africa.

The repeated labour disputes in Kenya's aviation industry have exposed long-standing tensions over labour relations, with the current strike being a manifestation of these ongoing challenges.
