Former Member of Parliament, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has formally declared his intention to vie for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Antwi submitted his nomination forms to the NPP National Headquarters in Accra on Friday, surrounded by party supporters, constituency executives, former government officials, and party elders.

Antwi's decision to run stems from the necessity of bringing experienced, disciplined, and results-driven leadership to the party, following its loss in the 2024 elections. He emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, as the NPP does not have the luxury of waiting. Antwi's decision was influenced by a thorough 18-month consultation process involving numerous party leaders, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his 2028 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and various party stakeholders, including the Council of Elders, current and former Members of Parliament, former government appointees, constituency executives, and grassroots members.

The consensus from these consultations was clear: the party desired transformative change, discipline, accountability, honesty, and leadership capable of initiating the rebuilding process immediately. Antwi reassured delegates that his candidacy is not about criticizing any individual or diminishing the service of the current national executives.

Instead, he stressed the need for a fresh approach, acknowledging the incumbent's contributions but emphasizing the importance of a new leader with the requisite experience and independence to guide the party to victory. He proposed that delegates decide whether to maintain the current leadership or entrust the party's future to a General Secretary with the requisite skills to restore discipline, rebuild trust with the grassroots, modernize the party's machinery, and prepare every constituency and polling station for success.

Antwi's vision for the NPP hinges on restoring confidence among grassroots members and fostering stronger relationships between the national headquarters, constituencies, polling stations, and party members. He pledged to unite the party, enhance its structures, bolster discipline and accountability, modernize operations, and construct a robust national campaign apparatus ready for effective competition in every constituency.

Antwi introduced his UNITE + Compact agenda, which aims to establish a new relationship between the national party and its grassroots, grounded in inclusion, mutual responsibility, accountability, and recognition of service. He underscored that the grassroots should be acknowledged year-round, not just during election seasons, and that the party must develop its members' capabilities, support its executives, and ensure those working towards victory have a meaningful stake in achieving it.

Antwi identified the election of Dr Bawumia as President and the restoration of the NPP's parliamentary majority as his primary objectives for 2028. He confidently stated that his background as a party activist, constituency organiser, Member of Parliament, and Deputy Minister equips him perfectly for the General Secretary position.

He reiterated his readiness to serve from day one, urging delegates to support his bid and collaborate in revitalizing the party, restoring its parliamentary majority, and returning the NPP to power by January 7, 2029.
