I Built GoleTalk — A Somali-First Social Platform Built for the Somali Internet 🇸🇴

Introducing GoleTalk - a Somali-first social platform designed to empower Somali-speaking communities. The project aims to provide a space for users to connect, share ideas, discover content, and explore AI in their native language. As the creator of GoleTalk, I'm eager to share the platform with the developer community and welcome any feedback.

Unlike most major social platforms built for global audiences, GoleTalk prioritizes language and cultural context from the beginning. We believe Somali-speaking users deserve a social experience tailored to their needs, with features not treated as an afterthought.

Our platform combines familiar social networking elements with infrastructure optimized for a Somali-first experience. Key areas of development include posts and social interactions, personalized content feeds, following and community discovery, real-time notifications, Flutter mobile applications, AI-powered features, Somali-first language experiences, and local data persistence for better performance.

Some of the technologies powering GoleTalk include Flutter for mobile app development, Laravel for the backend API and core infrastructure, Riverpod for state management, Isar for local persistence and caching, Firebase for mobile infrastructure, and OpenRouter for experimenting with AI models.

One of the main challenges we've faced is building a social feed that is both functional and fast. We're tackling this by implementing local persistence to avoid unnecessary data requests and create a seamless user experience as the platform grows. Additionally, we're exploring the potential of AI to better understand and engage with Somali-speaking users, rather than simply offering an unsupported or secondary language option.

Throughout the development process, we've learned that building a social platform goes beyond simply adding features. We must consider aspects such as performance, data synchronization, maintainable architecture, community needs, and localization, particularly for a language and community that has historically been underserved.

Our long-term vision extends beyond creating another social media app. We envision GoleTalk becoming an integral part of a broader Somali digital ecosystem, encompassing social networking, AI, creators, communities, and businesses.
