Historic Delhi Government School Sealed In Karachi

Karachi's renowned Delhi Government School has been placed under judicial custody, with the building in Federal B Area sealed by court order. The Sindh education department's Directorate of Education has issued a written notice outside the school, instructing students and teachers to contact the district education officer or the directorate.

The school building is being transferred to the Old Boys Association as per court orders. Delhi Government School was once one of Karachi's most prestigious public schools, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, with students consistently ranking at the top in matriculation exams. The school's dominance in board results continued until 1996, but private schools began to dominate science group positions thereafter.

Remarkably, a student from Delhi School secured a matric science position in 2024. The school was highly esteemed among Karachi's elite families, with admission being highly competitive and prestigious. Its teaching staff was also highly respected, and transfers to Delhi School were considered a significant honor. The school gained fame for its headmaster, "Shamsi Sahib," who famously rejected recommendations from influential circles during admissions.

A former education department official revealed that Shamsi Sahib would only consider admissions brought to him directly, not those recommended by others. The school education department is now planning the relocation of students, as three government schools currently operate in the same building, including girls' schools in morning and evening shifts and a boys' school in the morning shift.

The total enrolment is approximately 2,000 students, and plans are underway to transfer them to nearby government schools. The court orders for the transfer to the Old Boys Association were issued in 2007, when public schools were under city government control. Despite repeated attempts to preserve the school and pay rent up until June 2006, the other party never agreed to keep the building under government control.
