Guild of Sports Editors Hails Tinubu, Demands Credible NFF Reforms

The Guild of Sports Editors has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive move to reform Nigerian football after the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership. At an emergency meeting, the Guild called for genuine and comprehensive reforms, urging the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the General Secretary, and other members of the Executive Committee.

Nigerians have endured years of frustration, as the country's football team has failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, as well as missing out on FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups, and the Super Falcons failing to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time. The Guild commended Tinubu's courage to tackle the crisis and urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure the proposed Normalisation Committee consists of individuals with integrity, competence, and a genuine commitment to football development.

The Guild strongly warned that the committee should not become a vehicle for compensating friends, family, or cronies. They demanded the committee to have a clear mandate, membership criteria, and timeline, and prevent it from becoming a permanent fixture without an exit date. The Guild also emphasized the need to address the legal status of the Nigeria Football Federation and the establishment of a transparent electoral system, calling for a forensic audit of the NFF's finances, contracts, assets, and activities.
