Google changes US maps to Lake America from Lake Ontario

Google has updated its US-based maps to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, following US President Donald Trump's executive order last week. Canadian users will continue to see the traditional name Lake Ontario, while those outside North America will see both names. Indigenous and Canadian leaders have expressed dismay over the decision.

The change comes amid a trade war between the US and Canada, and echoes Google's previous action of renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America under Trump's order. Google's decision is based on the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) naming conventions. While many are up in arms, MapQuest is refusing the rename and offering a feature allowing users to rename Lake Ontario themselves.
