GoldBod concerns are about implementation, not individuals- Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has refuted allegations that his concerns pertaining to the GoldBod and Domestic Gold Purchase Programme target specific individuals. Instead, he clarified that his criticism is directed towards the institution and the execution of the programme, never at any individual. "Never have I ever mentioned anyone's name; I have consistently been referring to the GoldBod institution," Markin asserted during a press conference on August 31, 2026.

He elaborated that while the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme is a commendable initiative, its implementation has presented challenges that require scrutiny. Markin described it as a scheme introduced under the tenure of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, aiming to leverage Ghana's gold assets to stabilize the economy. He maintained that his minority party supports the concept but is troubled by the losses incurred during its implementation.

He cited the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warnings about the losses linked to the programme, urging a thorough investigation into these matters. Markin vehemently rejected suggestions that these losses were merely attributed to exchange rate fluctuations at Bank of Ghana or that the central bank was adhering to international standards.

He implored for patience, stating that the upcoming parliamentary investigation would allow all parties to lay out their arguments and ascertain the facts. "By October, when we begin the discussion, we will all know the truth," he promised.
