Ghana Immigration Service tackles human trafficking and exploitative street begging

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has launched an intelligence-led anti-human trafficking operation to rescue victims and dismantle exploitative street begging networks in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. Deputy Commissioner Maud Anima Quainoo stated the operation targeted organized begging used to traffic and control vulnerable foreigners, particularly women and children.

In Accra, key hotspots like Abossey Okai, Sabon Zongo, Madina Zongo Junction, Ashaiman, and Tema were targeted, alongside areas in Kumasi such as Asawase, Alabar, Akwatia Line, Dagomba Line, Sabon Zongo, Airport Junction, and Aboabo. Over 1,000 West African nationals, including 662 children, 145 men, and 248 women, were apprehended. This highlights child vulnerability within these exploitative systems.

A Nigerien woman rescued during the operation was found in labour and delivered a baby girl after medical examination. All rescued individuals were transferred to a holding centre for processing. The GIS is working with the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection to provide care and support to victims, especially children.

GIS Comptroller General Samuel Basintale Amadu advised the public to stop giving direct alms to migrant beggars, especially children, as it removes financial incentives for traffickers. The public is encouraged to donate through authorized channels like the Department of Social Welfare, children's homes, or NGOs.
