Foreign Ministry urges caution, says 36 Malaysians unaccounted for in China and 55 in Nepal

PUTRAJAYA, August 31 — Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, or Wisma Putra, has urged caution regarding the 36 Malaysians unaccounted for in China and 55 in Nepal following a mudslide at Gyirong Port in Xizang, China on August 26. Despite initial reports of three Malaysians among the missing, the ministry has clarified that these three individuals are already included in the 36 Malaysians reported uncontactable in China.

Consequently, the current figures remain at 36 Malaysians in China and 55 in Nepal. The embassies in Beijing and Kathmandu are working with local authorities to determine the safety and whereabouts of the remaining missing Malaysians, while cross-checking information to avoid duplication. In Nepal, the embassy has provided consular assistance to families of missing Malaysians, updated them on the situation, and facilitated communication with Nepalese authorities.

Families are advised to follow safety instructions issued by Nepalese authorities, and Malaysian embassies in both countries continue to engage with respective authorities to gain access to affected areas. The Malaysian Operations Room in Putrajaya is operating 24/7 to coordinate information and support Malaysians affected by the disaster.
